Abstract

The author differentiates two tendencies in the world linguistic process that to a great extend influence the functioning of the Russian language. The author describes the diversity of language social functions in various spheres of communication based on the examples of a few countries. That gives the grounds to differentiate these functions of the language depending on the objective and subjective factors, in some cases the ones that support the functioning of the Russian language, in other cases prevent from using it. The article also compares legal and functional status of the language.
