Abstract

Problems of the role and purpose of the Russian intellectuals analyzed in the contemporary reformed Russia. Characteristic features of intellectuals as stated by renown national and foreign political authors of the XIX and XX centuries are reviewed. Developments in two principal currents within the Russian intellectuals, namely "zapadniks" and "slavyanofils", their today counterparts, and their relationships with national authorities are traced. The author stress is on necessity to preserve and develop the noted "two stands" in the best interests of strengthening the national peculiarity and vitality under the expanding globalization processes.
