Abstract

In this article the historical role of Russia is considered in terms of social and natural history and civilizational approach. The main idea is that Russia is between the West and the East not only from geographical point of view, but from social, political and cultural point of view, too. This important fact determines position of Russia as intermediate, interstitial civilization. It is shown that many special characteristics of Russia’s development are related to this intermediate position. These special characteristics include, for example, difficult unsteady relations of Russia with Western and Eastern countries, its particular role in the World System and many internal social and cultural cleavages in Russian society. The article offers data of many polls concerning Russia’s position in the modern world. These data demonstrate that the majority of Russian people consider their country as particular Eurasian state which has many differences in comparison with Western countries.
