Abstract

In this paper we consider the interrelation between one’s own experience of childhood sexuality, sexual education, an attitude towards childhood sexuality and indicators of social and psychological adaptation of men and women in early adulthood. For a long time the role of sexuality in social and psychological adjustment was underestimated in psychology. Russian psychology is still being influenced by soviet period views when sexuality was ignored completely. However, at the moment sexual well-being is considered to be a part of mental health in Russia like in Europe and in the US. An attention towards childhood sexuality is not sufficient, while perception of one’s childhood sexual experience is a part of sexual and so social-psychological adaptation. Our paper explores perception of one’s childhood sexual experience as a part of social-psychological adjustment of the person. The data show that the acceptance of childhood sexuality is determined by the interrelation of personal experience, parental messages about sexuality and is related with several indicators of social-psychological adaptation in early adulthood.
