Abstract

This article presents the construct of ontological security based on R Laing’s concept. The authorial construct includes the security (embodiment) insecurity (unembodiment) continuum of existential settings, which relate to the ways of structuring the being-in-the-world and its elements (self, body, world, people, significant as individual value), and distinguish certain personality types, which, being relatively stable, may fluctuate under the influence of biological factors (age, state of health), sociocultural forces, or person’s existential choices. The existential settings represent the “generalfeelings” continuum, formed by experiences of two levels: less differentiated experiences of being-in-the-world elements as existential props, and more discrete experiences of autonomy from others and the world and simultaneous coherence with them. Suggestions for future research are discussed.
