Abstract

The article deals with only one aspect of creative works of Lars Sonck (1870–1956) — one of the most prominent Finnish architects of the period known as “national romanticism”, namely, civil constructions. The article continues a series dedicated to different spheres of Sonck’s expertise. During his long and prolific career he designed a number of office buildings in the centre of Helsinki, which vividly demonstrate how the artistic method of the architect changed in the first decade of the 20 th century which was a period of transition from Art Nouveau to Neoclassical style in Finnish architecture. The author of the article describes the background history of the construction of several office buildings, their peculiar features as well as those typical of the period, goes into details of the engineering solutions, speaks about the manner of exterior and interior decoration, and also provides information about their current condition and usage. Such in-depth analysis allows to fully understand the process of style formation in Finnish architecture of the early 20 th century.
