Jonathan Coe's novel "What a Carve Up!" (1994) is analyzed from the perspective of the family code. The aim of the study is to determine the characteristics of the family code, embodied in the novel, its significance to the novel as a whole. The method of motivic analysis, semiotic approach and analysis of images are used. The conclusion is that the family code in the novel operates on several artistic levels: motivic structure and system of images of the novel. Analysis of the sociocultural layer of the novel reveals the author's negative attitude to the family as a whole, that is embodied in the grotesque images of heroes and details related to family. Features of the family code can reveal the value of the carve-up theme in the novel. Through family relations author reveals the relationship of the British ruling elite and considers the results of the government's policy of Margaret Thatcher in the 1980s.

Роман Джонатана Коу «Какое надувательство!» (1994) анализируется с точки зрения семейного кода. Целью исследования является выявление особенностей семейного кода, воплощённого в романе, его значения для романа как целого. Используется метод мотивного анализа, семиотический подход и анализ системы образов. Делается вывод о том, что семейный код в романе функционирует на нескольких художественных уровнях: на уровне мотивной структуры и системы образов романа. Анализ социокультурного пласта романа выявляет негативное отношение автора к семье как целому, что воплощается в гротескных образах героев и связанных с семьёй деталей. Особенности семейного кода позволяют раскрыть значение темы надувательства в романе. Посредством семейных отношений автор выявляет взаимосвязи британской правящей элиты и рассматривает результаты политики правительства Маргарет Тэтчер в 1980-е гг.
