Abstract

The problem of air quality is actual due to the need to ensure favorable living conditions of the population and the preservation of ecosystems. In the previously adopted techniques experts in the physics of the atmosphere considered the so-called "air pollution potential", taking into account the meteorological characteristics of the surface air and vertical stratification of the atmosphere. Now due to the reduction of points and the frequency of aerological atmospheric sounding it is not possible to use information about the vertical distribution of temperature with the required discreteness. Specialists began to develop criteria to assess the potential accumulation of pollutants in air on the basis of data of surface meteorological observations. As initial materials, daily data from daily dimension of the Belgorod center for Hydrometeorology and environmental monitoring during 1998-2010 years were used.Annual variations of the coefficient of self-purification of K’m allows to identify seasonal patterns of accumulation and dispersion of pollutants. Favorable conditions for their dispersion (K’m ≥1.2) at all points observed in May June, in some areas this period increases. In Bogoroditskoye Fenino it lasts from April to September, in Belgorod from April to August, in Novy Oskol from April to July. The length of the periods of conditions adverse for dispersion of pollutants was also different in these areas (K’m <0.8): in Belgorod it was 4 months (October to January), in Bogoroditskoye Fenino 5 months (October to February), in Gotnya six months (September to February), in Novy Oskol and Valuyki 8 months (August to March).
