Abstract

The analysis of not translated into Russian language novel by A. Makine “The Earth and Sky of Jacques Dorme” is presented. Special attention is paid to the French theme and its role in the representation of Soviet reality. The relevance of the study is determined by the interest of the Humanities both to the image of “the other” and to problems of the representation of the image of Russia. The author analyzes the most significant images of the novel: images of Frenchwoman Alexandra, French pilot Jacques Dorme, French General Charles de Gaulle and examines their perception of Russian life, reflection of the Russian character. Special attention in the study is paid to the Second world war, which, in the opinion of the author of the article, appears in the work by A. Makine as destructive power, which can be opposed only by the eternal truth of nature, love and memory. The theme of memory is considered as a key to A. Makine’s creativity. The author notes that awareness of memory duty is typical for all of the novel’s characters: the hero-narrator who tells the story of Jacques Dorme to save him from oblivion; for Jacques Dorme himself who feels obliged to remember all the dead; for the French President and other heroes.
