Abstract

The Bulgarian nominations of children with special status in the family are considered: stepchildren, illegitimates, non-Christian, children born in Christmastide, children with physical defects from birth and so on. The study is conducted with the involvement of a broad dialect material. The lexis is analysed in terms of semantics and motivation. As a basic semantic opposition the binary opposition “own alien” is selected. It is stated that in the traditional Bulgarian culture one of the oppositions that define the attitude of society to some of its members is the opposition “flawed unfailing”. It is shown that the semantic opposition “own alien” in the nominations of children from a previous marriage is carried out mainly in the spatial aspect. The definitions of words emphasizes the difference between children who are inside the house, and those who came from outside: they are alien, but should be own. Motivational analysis of designations of illegitimate children has revealed that the semantic opposition of own and alien may be expressed by certain cultural codes: physical, phytomorphous et al. It is proved that the idea of limiting the social functions of children with marginal status in the family reflected in the lexicon. The nominations depict social rejection, alienation of these children and the rejection of differences.
