Abstract

This article tells about the major demographic problems and health of the population of Russia from 1985 to 2010 and provides demographic projections till 2020. Proposals are made as to how the Russian healthcare system should respond to the risks and demographic challenges, the most pressing among those being high premature mortality, especially among working men, birth rate decline and poor health of children. Morbidity has been growing steadily: over the last 20 years incidence of acute and chronic diseases has increased 1.5 times and that of mortality increased 1.3 times over the same period.
