Abstract

The aim of the article is to prove that social novel was developed due to the works by E. Gaskell in 19th century English literature. It is assumed that social novel was a popular genre of realistic literature in Great Britain of the 19th century. The social novel is considered in the article as a base of several generic modifications: socio-psychological, socio-ethic, socio-political novels. «Mary Barton» is regarded in the article as a classical social novel of the 19th century; «North and South» is connected with the evolution of the genre to a socio-psychological version. Both novels deal with industrial theme, which is quite typical to social novel of the 19th century. An industrial center determines in E. Gaskell’s works not only chronotope and the problematics of the novels, but the system of personages, differentiated by the social collisions.
