Abstract

The article describes the role of dictionaries of politicians’ language in author lexicography which studies the dictionaries devoted to famous people. The author of the research work regards the dictionaries of politicians’ language in connection with the conception of the language personality and points out that the high degree of ideologisation and politicisation of the society is the reason of linguists’ deep interest in dictionaries of this type. Special attention is paid to the dictionaries which register quotations of famous political figures because a quotation is a precedent utterance having become a part of linguocultural space of a speech community. The author traces the history of dictionaries of politicians’ quotations from the first concordances to the literary works of the great English writers up to modern times revealing in detail the stages of evolution of a quotation from the illustrative example up to the independent unit of lexicographic description. The article underlines such functions of a dictionary of politician’s quotations as reference, didactic, mnemonic, cultural and communicative ones. The author reveals the connection of the peculiarities of the dictionaries of such a type with the modern lexicographic trends: the anthropocentric orientation, the change of a user’s profile and the transformation of the science of dictionary-making into the reference science which is focused on the user’s perspective.
