The analysis of literature published in the end of 19th, in the beginning of 20th centuries, was carried out. It was presented how the level of research was changing from organoleptic to instrumental, from receiving elementary physicchemical constants to preparative component separation, and, of late years, to microanalysis which admits to establish to 95% of components of essential oils' composition. Direct close relationship was noted in knowledge of essential oils and development of instrumental and analytic basis of organic compounds' chemistry. Modern directions in exploration of odoriferous plants and perspective ways of usage of native essential oils (in medicine, sanitation, aromatherapy) were educed.
