Abstract

This paper considers the interaction between semantics and lexicographical description, with particular reference to Russian substantive idioms, that can become or have already become the subject of legal disputes. The paper concentrates on two aspects of idioms, that of shift in the contextual evaluative meaning and variation. The paper looks at general and specific types of variation, as evidenced in a large corpus of current Russian. Its variability is evident in corpus data, but is under-represented in dictionaries.
