
The article is concerned with the analysis of historical novel “The Tower of London”. The history of its creation is given. The fact that W. Ainsworth was the successor of W. Scott in the field of historical romance is emphasized. The connection of the involved romance with the Gothic tradition, in particular with that of A. Radcliffe, is revealed. The Gothic motives that the author uses in this romance are dealt with. “The Tower of London” by W. Ainsworth is compared with ‘Notre Dame de Paris’ by V. Hugo. Refs 16.
В статье анализируется исторический роман У. Эйнсворта «Тауэр». Приводится история его создания. Подчеркивается тот факт, что У. Эйнсворт был продолжателем традиций В. Скотта в области исторического романа. Раскрывается связь данного романа с готической традицией, в частности с той, которой придерживалась А. Рэдклифф. Рассматриваются готические мотивы, которыми автор оперирует в своем произведении. Проводится параллель между «Тауэром» У. Эйнсворта и «Собором Парижской Богоматери» В. Гюго. Библиогр. 16 назв.
