Abstract

The present article is devoted to the investigation of the structural and semantic diversity of English multi-word compounds registered in the blog of Cambridge Dictionaries Online during 2011-2015 years. In the article the multi-word compound is defined as a compound word including more than two stems. The author determines the part of speech of multi-word compounds, shows that they are not homogeneous in their structure, as well as analyses their meaning. New multi-word compounds are indicative of analytical tendencies in present-day English. In the end the author of the article comes to the conclusion that on the one hand, multi-word compounds possess a needed precise meaning. On the other hand, the easiness of creating new words in a language has a potential danger in enlarging the lexicon of the language by useless, superfluous words.
