Abstract

The article explores the problem of the sources of national consciousness in the formation of the code of Austrian literature and accounts for theoretical difficulties of defining it at present. On the basis of research objectives the specific aspects of the national code are formulated, namely the multicultural nature of Austrian literature; the integration of German-speaking, Romance, Slavonic and other literatures; the synthesis of literature and different types of art, especially music and theatre, as well as the difference between the Austrian and the German literary codes in spite of their common language. It is the literature of the capital city of Vienna that has concentrated to the highest degree the integrative cultural and literary codes.
