Abstract

It is stated in the article that the major part of Belarusian intelligentsia in the second half of the 19 th early 20 th centuries were teachers. The age, gender, social and ethnic characteristics of primary and secondary school teachers are reviewed, and the trends of change for these characteristics are described. It is concluded that the teachers of that period had an insufficient level of pedagogical education, young age and lack of experience. Throughout the period under review there was an acute shortage of teachers for the rapidly growing needs of public education in Belarus
