Abstract

This article reveals the history of informal social relations (clan) development in Kabardian and Balkarian communities in the period from 1920 to 1930 based on the specific facts, as a result of unjust social policy of the Soviet authorities towards the so-called "classalien". Clan-forming experience gained by Kabardians and Balkars in the period of Soviet modernization, when their social structure was undergone a significant transformation, has a negative impact on the socioeconomic development of the region till nowadays. Soviet modernization of the 1920-1930 subjected primarily to the interests of the authorities, helping formation of prerequisites for the informal social relations development in Kabardian and Balkar communities where family and kin relationships were traditionally strong. The selective social (class) policy of the Soviet government in this period forced the Kabardians and the Balkars to use informal social relations as the main mechanisms of adaptation to a new social order. The article identifies the factors that contributed to the development of various forms of clan relations in the Kabardian and Balkar communities.
