31 patients with endoscopically negative GERD were studied. Histological analysis of bioptates of the third lower portion of esophagus taken 1-2 sm proximally to denticulate line was made. Microscopic changes in the mucous membrane of esophagus were found out in all these patients. Symptoms of esophagitis prevailed over morphological findings. Uninflammatory changes e. g. hyperkeratosis, dyskeratosis and parakeratosis occurred more often in patients with the prolonged case history. The results obtained didn't show any correlation between the course of GERD and the formation of leukoplakia and metaplasia of the esophagus.
