Abstract

The article considers the genre "new narratives of the slaves," actively developing in the African-American literature from the second half of the XXth century, but this genre is little-studied by the Russian critics. These works represent the experience and consequences of slavery in America. To solve this problem modern authors depart from the autobiographical form of works of his predecessors and look to the historical novel genre to present their own modern vision of the history of his race. New narratives of slaves entering in a dialogue with the works of black writers (classical narratives of slaves), showing modern view of the events of the past and creating new interpretations of the historic times, which affected the identity formation of African Americans. The author accenting the appeal to the past from modernity as one of the main features of the genre complete it with the other important features historism, presence of distance between the event and the author.
