Abstract

Linguists have given rhyming slang (Rh Sl) due attention. There is abundant literature devoted to rhyming slang including dictionaries, monographs, and articles. The problems of interest cover the territorial and social differentiation of rhyming slang. Of the 8 regional varieties distinguished, it is the British and Australian rhyming slang varieties that have been described in detail, while information on the New Zealand and South African varieties is rather poor. This article focuses on the Scottish rhyming slang which is characterized by peculiar phonetic (pronouncing) and lexical features. Some Scottish rhyming slang units rhyme with words of the Scottish tongue. The Scottish rhyming slang is defined as a regional variety with a local variety linked with Glasgow. There are more than 50 Glasgow rhyming slang items in the author’s card-file. Some of them are associated with Glasgow’s realia represented mostly by toponymic and anthroponymic names.
