Abstract

Current trends and the role of international tourism in the small island developing states are considered. Many of the issues and challenges associated with sustainable tourism development are still very much in evidence today. It is apparent that the shifttowards ecological tourism based on sustainable tourism development is occurring apace both within the tourism industry itself and in tourist destination regions.
