Abstract

The paper submits a non-traditional interpretation of the logical square and of the result of its development the logical hexagon, which interpretation gives a possibility of logically consistent synthesis of two mutually excluding paradigms in philosophical epistemology. The first one is the ancient Greek conception of episteme as such a necessary rational knowledge which cannot be falsified on principle. The second one the modern conception of positivist epistemology, which insists upon both: the verifiability and the falsifiability of any (scientific) knowledge derived from experience. The relation between these conceptions seems to be the contradictoriness. However in this paper it is demonstrated that it only seems so, as the relation between the indicated doctrines is not the contradictoriness but the contrariety. In the paper the synthesis of the seemingly quite contradictory doctrines is represented as a logicalopposition-square (and hexagon) of epistemic statements.
