Abstract

A brief history of foreign words in Japanese is described in the paper. At the same time Russian loanwords features are dealt with. The analysis of these words gives the following results: loanwords undergo transformations according to the Japanese phonetic and phonotactic rules while demonstrating functions of syllables and morae. In this case partial influence of the donor language phonology on the recipient language is observed: its system elements show different steadiness with respect to foreign influence.
