Abstract

The article is concerned with various aspects of semantic derivation, one of the major tendencies in the dynamics of modern English phraseology. Among the most wide-spread processes are extension and restriction / specification of codified phraseological meaning as a result of metaphoric or metonymic transfer. These processes serve as a major source of polysemy in the sphere of phraseology, including the development of terminological or professional meanings on the basis of idiomatic expressions.
