Abstract

Nanostructured electrodes on a flexible polymer biocompatible support were fabricated using nanoimprint lithography. For the control studies planar (un-modified) electrodes were designed as well. Two types of electrodes were characterized by scanning electron microscopy and electrochemically. Comparison of bioelectrocatalytic activity and stability of biocathodes designed by physical immobilization of Myrothecium verrucaria bilirubin oxidase on inmodified and nanostructured surfaces were performed. The current densities of oxygen electroreduction achieved using nanostructured biocathodes were 3.35 and 7.82 times higher compared to planar bioelectrodes in air and oxygen saturated phosphate buffer, respectively, reaching maximal values as high as 250 µА/сm2. The operational stability of nanostructured bicathodes was 7 times higher compared to unmodified bioelectrodes.
