Abstract

The mythological stories that have reached our days have preserved the syncretic images of «tree man», and «tree-mythical creature». They formed due to the animistic philosophy of the nature, totemistic world perception, specific cosmological ideas. Remaining in usage for a prolonged time period, these images get transformed. Their anthropomorphic substance is singled out into a separate character. The phytomorphic component, on the other hand, turns into the attribute, locus or abode thereof. Nonetheless, the anthropomorphized character in folk art, both verbal and visual, often retains the traits of former relation with the tree, and so does the tree retain human traits. Neither of the components severs the connection to the common archetype which sets the boundaries for their transformation and rethinking.
