Abstract

Organic connection of Russian classical literature of the 19th century with the literature of old Rus’ of and with spiritual foundations of Orthodoxy is revealed in the article. Russian religious writing was for seven centuries. Church Slavonic was the soul of Old Russian written language. Brothers Cyril (Constantine) and Methodius from Thessalonica invented the Slavonic alphabet in mid 9th century. They created it specifically for translation God-inspired texts from Greek language. Acquisition of writing was a sacred event for the Russians, and attitudes towards written word in Rus’ had a religious character. “Secular”, or “new” literature appeared in Russia much later than in Western Europe, but Russian classics kept faith in the divine nature of word. Russian people as late as in the 19th century gave the sacred meaning to literary work. A poet was realized in the role of the true faith bearer. His poetic word received value bestowed from above, overhung by Divine authority of the Word. Since the reforms of Peter I, a special spiritual burden fell to a writer’s personality, because these reforms undermined the foundations of the Orthodox Church. Russian people chose their writers as spiritual authorities in these conditions. As an ancient scribe of Rus’, a Russian writer considered oneself to be a conductor of godsent truth. Inspiration led one in awe. One saw in poetry not “self-expression” but “service” imposing on poet highest spiritual and moral obligation.
