Abstract

A new atypical antipsychotic asenapine in the form of sublingual tablets is used in the dose 5 or 10 mg twice a day. This medication requires a special administration schedule that takes into account the times of meals and liquid intake. Dosage adjustments are not routinely required on the basis of age, gender, race, renal insufficiency or mild / moderate liver impairment status (asenapine is not recommended in cases of severe liver impairment). The data of multiple research point to efficacy of using asenapine in thetreatment of patients with schizophrenia and bipolar mania. The effect of the drug is also noticeable in the maintenance treatment and in relapse prevention. In general, the efficacy of asenapine is close to that of other atypical antipsychotics, and as it is well tolerated, it can be recommended for use in clinical practice.
