Abstract

The article examines the image and symbolism of the electric light in the works of Palekh lacquered miniatures of 1920-1960s. The author compares the various statements about the role of the divine light in the Old Russian icon painting and the works of Palekh miniatures in question. The miniatures of Palekh artists in public museums and private collections are being analyzed in the article, as well as the characteristics that were given to these works in periodicals of the Soviet period. The author concludes that “man-made” light as a propaganda image in Palekh lacquer miniatures, being a reflection of the Soviet ideology, is an integral part of ancient iconographic “ideal”, nominated in the works of E. N. Trubetskoy and P. A. Florensky. The purpose of the article is a link between lingering and overcome (as it appeared in the Soviet period) traditions of Old Russian icon painting and ideological views of the Soviet system of its own future.
