Abstract

The collaboration between famous painter of battle pieces N. S. Samokish, who was more widely known as a skilled book decorator at the turn of the 19 th-20 th century, and his wife remarkable aquarellist, book illustrator and Art Nouveau admirer E. P. Samokish-Sudkovskaya is explored in this article. Their cooperation with prominent publishing companies of that time is shown. Creating graphic design for many printed editions including albums that reflected public events and scientific achievements in Russia, as well as illustrations for literary works of Russian classics made them famous book illustrators. The question of authorship of the artists’ drawings is opened. The masters’ close contact determined the presence of interesting interaction between their creative methods. Their joint work done in Saint-Petersburg Vitebsky railway station building, where monumental panel paintings that reflected The Tsarskoye Selo Railway’s history were placed, is of great interest. The importance of this creative union that left a significant mark in Russian art is noted. Refs 23. Figs 6.
