Abstract

Nowadays linguists acknowledge the fact that in text there exist language means of expressing hidden meaning, i.e. the language base of subtext. The category of subtext is closely connected with syntax, and the communication of information is made possible not through explicit expression but through the use of potential meanings of syntactical forms. The article shows that expressive punctuation marks can be used to create the pragmatic effects of understatement, implication and hidden meaning. Subtext manifests itself vividly, first of all, in fictional and poetic discourses, in which it is connected with individual senses. Social and political journalism also uses the category of subtext, the peculiarity of which is a greater degree of distinctness when decoding social overtones.
