Abstract

The paper looks at the closeness of the link between two events in the lives of Russian women: conception and marriage registration. The authors use the disaggregated 2010 data of current vital statistics on births for selected regions of Russia to analyze the relationship between marriage registration date and the date of conception, as well as age-related and regional features of this relationship. Special attention is given to the phenomenon of registering out-of-wedlock births based on the parents’ joint application as well as to the association between this type of conduct and the parents’ age. Using 2010 Census micro-data the authors examine the change of women’s family status during the first five years after the birth of the first child. The results of the study reveal that in Russia the widespread practice of registering marriages during the second trimester of pregnancy still persists. This is most typical among young people getting married for the first time. Together with the relatively high break-up rates of marriage among couples with children, this supports the interpretation of this kind of marriage as a marker of traditionalist demographic behavior.
