Abstract

The paper presents the results of the investigation of the central and autonomic nervous system in 116 women aged 18 to 56 years with chronic autoimmune thyroiditis. The examination included studies of the brain (electroencephalography, magnetic resonance imaging), autonomic nervous system, and neuropsychological functions. Based on clinical, laboratory, MRI and EEG findings encephalopathy was detected in most (89,6%) patients as the presenting syndrome of chronic autoimmune thyroiditis. Replacement hormone therapy with thyroxine was found to have a noticeable effect on cognitive function, psycho-emotional status and brain electrogenesis. It also normalized autonomic dysfunction in patients with chronic autoimmune thyroiditis.
