Шмелева, в том числе его современники, неоднозначно восприняли итоговое произведение писателя и указывали на некоторую противоречивость в использовании писателем элементов различных жанровых форм.
The article is devoted to the final novel by I.S. Shmelev «Way of Heaven» in the aspect of its genre. The genre of the novel form synthesizes features of life, diary, confession, preaching and sermon. In addition to the hagiographical literature classic the writer used the novel line and created a new genre in exile-«spiritual novel» which was the innovation of the author of the book. Researchers of I.S. Shmelev’s works, his contemporaries as well, ambiguously accepted the final product of the writer and noted some inconsistency in the writer’s use of various elements of genre forms.
