Abstract

In the framework of the general concept of a rock as a medium with internal energy sources and sinks, a two-dimensional mathematical model of a rock massif is developed with regard to its internal block structure, anisotropy of properties, interblock sliding and softening. A closed system of equations is formulated making possible numerical solution of a quasistatic boundary problem. Using the finite element method, a solution is derived for the problem on deformation of a rock massif near an extended horizontal mine working. Patterns of softening zones and zones of residual shear strength at different stage of stable and unstable loading are presented. Unstable loading involves uncontrollable dynamic release of accumulated elastic energy.
