Abstract

The article studies mechanisms of formation of the mental representation of Russia in European parliamentary discourse on the background of the Ukrainian crisis. Political conceptualization is presented as a process of consistent transformations of certain content in parliamentary communication. This process is defined by the degree of institutionalization of information and passes through correlating stages from eventful-factual to rhetorical-argumentative and further on to conventional-conclusive (legitimizing) stage. The argumentative parliamentary discourse is characterized by the necessity to show the target audience the vital importance of the event, which turns into a commonly accepted (and, therefore, reliable) fact. Such transformation represents a transition from the eventful-factual to rhetorical-argumentative stage of formation of discourse. The rhetorical-argumentative stage precedes the conventional-conclusive stage of legitimizing, reflecting the main function of parliamentary discourse adopting acts of parliament (laws, etc.). Arguments on the part of the thing, general convention and man himself, on the other hand, are intended to turn the propositional content of parliamentary discourse into the content of thought of the recipient. The article demonstrates how an event in case of becoming an object of a proposition loses its phenomenal character and acquires the status of a fact as a unit of content of parliamentary communication. The presented research is based on the analysis of authentic political discourse about Russia in the context of the Ukrainian crisis.
