Abstract

Formation of propositional connotations is investigated on the material of the English language within the framework of paradigmatic syntax and the theory of the dicteme. It is demonstrated that connotations are formed on the basis of a double expression of a predicative function, simultaneous realization of three or more predicative functions, introduction of elements of non-categoricalness into a sentence. It was concluded that propositional connotations, becoming clear in a dicteme, may serve the purpose of indirect characterization of personages, the motives of their actions, their inner state; sentences “overloaded” with predicative functions may lead to the climax of the text.
