Abstract

The analysis of XVII century documents suggests that Bashkir patrimony lands along South-Eastern border of Ufa district were shared among all Bashkir tribes. Hunting and fishing lands along the Yaik, Sakmar and Or rivers, salt crafts at the Ilek served the reason for ethnic consolidation as protection and exploitation of these lands required coordinated efforts of all the folks. However, a Bashkir tribe (‘semirodsy’) had a unique status since they had been given lands along the Yaik, separate from other Bashkir tribes. On this basis, the author concludes that the ‘semirodcy’ were the most recent ethnic component of Bashkir people, resulting from the break-up of the Nogaj Horde.
