Статья посвящена личности М. С. Куторги и сформировавшемуся вокруг него научному сообществу историков. Определяется круг учеников Куторги. Используя источники личного происхождения, автор выявляет те личные и профессиональные качества, благодаря которым учёный «притягивал» к себе студентов, а также возможные причины, повлиявшие на осложнение отношений мэтра с его воспитанниками
