Путаница в разграничении и применении понятий сигнал и знак затрудняет понимание особенностей поведения высших животных. Признавая наличие знаковой системы коммуникации у высших животных, не выявлены основы ее формирования. Отсутствует дифференциация функциональной значимости знаков знаковой системы коммуникации и знаков, символов речевой системы коммуникации. Остается не раскрытым генез формирования человеческой речи. Не изучены процессы становления образного и абстрактного мышления, их соотношение с речью. Не установлено принципиальное различие функции знаков и символов человеческой речи, хотя попытки этого существуют.
