Abstract

This article is dedicated to the analysis of female images in the novel The Bell, written by I. Murdoch, from the standpoint of the feminist concept of Simone de Beauvoir. It shows the impact of patriarchal power and social image of femininity on female heroines and considers the question of whether a woman can take her place in society in the condition of constant imposition of certain models of behaviour. A comparison of S. de Beauvoir's and A. Murdoch's views on women in postwar society illuminates a very important aspect of the English writer's creative work.
