The short historiographical review of the works of Russian writers of the second half of XIX early XX centuries devoted to the study of various aspects of relations between the representatives of ethnic and religious communities of the Volga-Kama region. The results of the comparative analysis of views on this problem in the region’s largest scientific research and educational institutions and officials of state institutions are given. Particular attention is paid to the authors’ coverage of the dynamics of the ethnic and religious relations between different religious communities under the influence of confessional policy of the state and the missionary activity of religious organizations. The researches are evaluated in terms of the coverage of interconfessional rivalry between Orthodoxy and Islam for political and cultural influence on the Finno-Ugric peoples of the region preserving pagan beliefs. The conclusion is made that the works submitted by the authors have made a significant contribution to the development of theoretical and methodological approaches to the study of ethnic and religious processes in the ethnically diverse region. The significance of these works lies in the fact that many of the ideas first set out in them have not lost their value to date, continue to influence current research and allow to reconstruct the ethno-confessional processes in the contact zones taking inti account education, national and religious policy of the state and countervailing factors in the development of the country, region, territory.

Выполнен краткий историографический обзор трудов русских авторов второй половины XIX начала XX веков, посвященных исследованию различных аспектов взаимоотношений представителей этноконфессиональных общностей Волго-Камья. Представлены результаты сопоставительного анализа взглядов на указанную проблему ученых крупнейших в регионе научно-образовательных учреждений и чиновников государственных учреждений. Особое внимание уделяется освещению данными авторами динамики развития этноконфессиональных отношений между представителями разных общностей под влиянием конфессиональной политики государства и миссионерской деятельности религиозных организаций. Дается оценка исследований с точки зрения освещения межконфессионального соперничества православия и ислама за политическое и культурное влияние на финно-угорские народы региона, сохраняющие языческие верования. Сделан вывод о том, что труды представленных авторов внесли значительный вклад в разработку теоретических и методологических подходов к исследованию этноконфессиональных процессов в этнически неоднородном регионе. Значение этих трудов заключается в том, что многие идеи, впервые изложенные в них, не утратили своего значения до настоящего времени и продолжают оказывать влияние на современные исследования, позволяют реконструировать этноконфессиональные процессы в контактных зонах с учетом как государственной образовательной, национальной и вероисповедной политики, так и разнонаправленных факторов развития страны, региона, территории.
