Abstract

Purpose. The overview of scientific perceptions of the agglomerations formation and development, the study of theoretical approaches to defining the essence of the "agglomeration" concept, the research of topical aspects of the agglomeration processes management. Methods. With the help of retrospective analysis the main development stages of the scientific perceptions of agglomerations are highlighted. The agglomeration processes are studied on the basis of comparative analysis. Results. A review of scientific views on the formation and development of agglomerations is introduced; theoretical approaches to define the essence of the "agglomeration" concept are studied; the author's interpretation of the "agglomeration" concept is given; approach to identify non-urban agglomerations in Russia is provided; relevant aspects of the agglomeration process are researched. Scientific novelty. The scientific novelty of the work lies in the author's proposed interpretation of the "agglomeration" concept and also in the new approach to identify non-urban agglomerations.
