Abstract

The paper is devoted to such factor of military leadership in Ancient Rome, as a commander’s personal example. By the end of Republic there developed a method of Roman military leadership, which allowed many commanders to provide an effective control over their soldiers. Generally, it was a method of persuasion. The given type of leadership found its use in the formal and informal contexts of military camp life that imposed on the commander a higher level of control of his appearance, gestures and a voice. both for oratory, and for actually practice of military leadership. However, assuming the function of a perfect soldier, demonstrating the ability to endure hardships, the commander tried to achieve in this way his main goal absolute subordination of his soldiers.
