Abstract

Comparing the representation of the topic of family and marriage in the works of the English liberal thinker John Stuart Mill and the Russian religious philosopher Nikolai Berdyaev, the article analyses the different nature of the discussions about family and marriage issues in England and Russia in the second half of 19 century. In England the debate revolving around family and marriage was primarily concerned with the issues of the emancipation of women and equal rights for both sexes in social and private spheres and stressed the liberal values of freedom, equality and progress and their importance for the welfare of the whole society. In Russia the discussion about family and marriage was greatly influenced by the religious renaissance and spiritual interpretation of such categories as love, freedom and person.
