Abstract

The article deals with the diplomatic activity of Clemens Metternich, the Austrian Minister of Foreign Affairs, aimed at solving the Polish-Saxony problem. The latter became a key issue in settling territorial disputes in post-Napoleonic Europe at the Vienna Congress. Metternich succeeded in strengthening the foreign policy position of the Austrian Empire and thus gained a reputation of a protector of European interests. He also managed to oppose the plans of Alexander I and to achieve a settlement of the Polish-Saxony issue that was favourable for the Austrian Empire. These conclusions shed new light on Clemens Metternich as a guarantor of the European order.
