Abstract

The authors follow the universal approach while dealing with the notion of “insurance”. The article points out that insurance includes self-insurance as an independent type of insurance inherent in each economic subject. The paper considers self-insurance as a peculiar type of economic activity. Certain refinements concerning the notion of self-insurance and its features are given by the authors. It is believed that when self-insurance takes place insurance funds aimed at compensating for sacrificing in any insurance case are created and used by the himself/herself.The article focuses on advantages and disadvantages of self-insurance. The authors managed to show the gradual development of self-insurance in Russian reality. The figures concerning household units are also given in the paper. The analysis of different forms of self-insurance made by the authors lets them conclude that Russian economy lacks certain reliable mechanisms helping to save and accumulate the so called “long money” invested in the country’s economy. As a result, the decisions made by citizens get a a greater importance and the financial literacy is looked as the key factor at present.
